If Peugeot had continued the adventure of segment A with Toyota, the Aygo X would have given birth to a Sochaux twin called 1008. We imagined it.
Peugeot 1008: the Toyota Aygo X clone that the Lion did not want – After more than 15 years of collaboration between PSA and Toyota, during which two generations of micro-city dwellers have followed one another, the Japanese manufacturer is now going it alone with a certain Aygo X, just revealed. Citroën will not renew its C1, just as Peugeot will not offer any descendants to its 108, failing to believe in the profitability of such projects, on a segment with few margins. For As many, Auto-Moto played with his graphics tablet to imagine what might have looked like the replacement of the Lion model, at little cost.
A more profitable X variable
Due to its positioning noticeably eyeing the side of SUVs, the new Toyota Aygo, third of the name, is now flanked by the monogram X (pronounce Cross). She hopes to relaunch her career by surfing on the wave of pseudo-backpackers, even if it means seeing its prices soar. Because, not content with raise your plate (+ 5 cm), the newcomer is undergoing an intense growth crisis, causing her total length to drop from 3.46 m to 3.70 m. Arguments sufficient to raise its prices, but to which the Stellantis group was not sensitive. At least for the moment, because it is said that a such a project, shared between Peugeot, Citroën, Opel and Fiat, would be in the running.
From 108 to 1008
In the meantime, we imagined the Sochaux counterpart of the Toyota Aygo X. Logically, she adopts the central double zero devolved to the SUV range, within the Peugeot range. Our 1008, heir to 107 and 108, renewed the front fenders and the hood of the Japanese, for the sake of economy. Its specific optics integrate the famous light signatures in the shape of fangs, around a grille adopting the new brand emblem, inaugurated on the last opus of 308. We find this emblem on the sides, at the front of the doors, as well as on the hubs of the rims. Finally, the stern is distinguished by exchanging the vertical lights of the Toyota for downscaled optics, branded with three luminous signatures.
Without regret ?
The modifications that Auto-Moto made to the Toyota Aygo X, to make it a Peugeot model, prove that the French firm could have carried out this project at little cost. Lower costs from which Citroën could have benefited, by giving birth toa C1 Aircross, while Opel could have revived the Karl Rocks, in the same way. It will take a few more years before these projects, led exclusively by Stellantis, see the light of day. But we can only regret this split of the European group with the Japanese giant, as its Aygo X appears to be successful, taking advantage of the modern technical basis of a certain Yaris.
