Stellantis is asking 276,000 owners of Dodge and Chrysler vehicles in the United States to immediately stop driving their vehicles following a fault in the Takata airbags.
Hard blow for Stellantis and 276,000 customers in the United States. The automotive group has in fact realized that their vehicles encounter a problem with the airbags. It calls on the owners of defective vehicles to immediately stop driving them.
The problem concerns l’airbag Takata. “The longer these vehicles go unrepaired, the greater the risk of airbag rupture in the event of an accident”, details the Franco-Italian-American group in a message published on its website. And for good reason, three fatal accidents related to this system have already taken place in recent months.
The fault observed occurs when the airbag explodes. The latter can throw metal fragments. A real grenade, the problem of which has been known since 2014. This has led to numerous recall campaigns, since the Takata group has gone bankrupt.
Stellantis reports having learned of the existence of two fatal accidents during which the airbag tore. A potential rupture of the airbag is involved in a third accidentwhich occurred in the last seven months.
Dodge and Chrysler models affected by Stellantis airbag issues
The affected models are Dodge Magnum station wagons, Dodge Challenger coupes, and Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans. These last go 2005 to 2010. This therefore concerns nearly 276,000 vehicles.
Stellantis has contacted the affected owners. Letters, emails, text messages, calls, representatives of the firm sometimes even went until knocking at the conductors of these cars. This is in order to push them to carry out the necessary repair. A free operation, which takes less than an hour.
At present, about 20% of owners have not yet completed this operation.
