Google Maps will soon be enriched with a new feature focusing on the most fuel-efficient routes.
If you use your car regularly, you have undoubtedly noticed how the price of fuel has increased in recent times. And none is spared, not even diesel, which is reaching levels higher than those which triggered the yellow vests crisis three years ago already. On average, the price per liter has climbed 12% over the last six months, all fuels combined, with a more significant increase in certain regions, such as Île-de-France. So you will understand, fill up is more and more difficult, and the days when the price of gasoline and diesel had fallen with the first lockdown are now far behind us. If the Minister of Ecological Transition, Barbara Pompili had asked distributors to make a gesture by lowering their margins, it should however be remembered that 60% of the amount of fuel consists of various and varied taxes. A distribution which had also participated in the outbreak of the crisis of November 2018.
While it will be difficult to find prices equivalent to those of March 2020, it may soon be possible to reduce consumption thanks to more cost-saving journeys. Indeed, Google Maps plans to launch a new feature, allowing its users to choose the most environmentally friendly route, thereby saving more fuel. According to the American firm, this novelty also “ the potential to avoid more than a million tonnes of carbon emissions per year, which is equivalent to taking more than 200,000 cars off the road “. However, it will take a little patience, because this update will arrive first in the United States, before landing in Europe during the next year, on Android and iOs. This new option will then display several information, such as the fuel savings achieved compared to a conventional route, as well as the saving or loss of time.
New functions for everyone
In addition to wanting to help motorists consume less and pollute less, Google Maps also wants to better assist cyclists and users of electric scooters. A new “light” navigation mode will therefore be offered in the coming months, which will then allow users to enjoy a more refined display, with only the essential information. The Californian company affirms that “ you can follow your trip progress, see your estimated time of arrival updated in real time, and even know the elevation of your route so you can stay focused on what matters most: the road “. It will then be possible to have access to all this information without even having to keep the screen of your smartphone unlocked. Called Lite Navigation, it should arrive almost at the same time as the update for motorists.
