Car of the Year 2023 : le Volkswagen ID.Buzz grand favori ?

The Car of the Year finalists have been announced. The electric is in force, with in particular the new electric Combi from Volkswagen.

The “Car of the year” trophy, car of the year in good French, remains the most prestigious automotive distinction on the European market. The prize is awarded by a jury made up of around sixty journalists from the four corners of Europe, with a representation of countries in line with the weight of the corresponding market.

Big change for the 2023 edition: the name of the winning model will be revealed at the Brussels Motor Show. It had been done for a few years in Geneva, but the Swiss show has had a series of cancellations since the outbreak of the Covid crisis.

One thing does not change, however: after an initial voting process, the jury determined a list of seven finalist cars, ready to succeed the Kia EV6. And an electric has a good chance of taking over from an electric, because models of the genre are present in the majority in the shortlist.

There are thus three 100% electric models: the Nissan Ariya, Toyota bZ4X and Volkswagen ID.Buzz. Added to this are two vehicles that offer electric in addition to other types of engines: the Kia Niro and the Jeep Avenger (if the latter should only be electric in France, a petrol unit will exist on other markets).

The list is completed by models that offer hybrids: simple hybrid with the Renault Austral and rechargeable hybrid with the Peugeot 408. These French cars can be favorites if the jury does not want to win another electric car, the Renault even seeming to be the best placed thanks to its very generalist positioning. Renault has also not won for a long time (2006 with the Clio 3).

But overall, we can clearly see the ID.Buzz as the big favourite. There is the electric trend, but also the nice side of the machine, which has already received a good reception from the press during the tests. Even if the prices are high, the order books are well filled, proof that the model also appeals to the public.

If Volkswagen may have seemed favored at one time by German voters, we note that the ID.3 and ID.4 did not win the year they were in the running. So this may be the time to distinguish an ID.

See you on January 13, 2023 to find out the winner!
