The Catalan police have announced that they have fined 205 motorists remaining in the middle lane on the motorway since the beginning of the year.
We have all come across it before. A plague of modern times: the driver who stays in the middle lane on the highway. A reprehensible behavior, even if it remains rare in France. Rare, but not impossible, at least in Catalonia. The Catalan police have indeed announced that they have fined 205 motorists caught in the act in this situation, reports the daily The Independent.
“Using the right lane to drive and the left or middle lane to overtake, this allows more fluid traffic and avoids accidents”, let go of the Mossos (autonomous police force of Catalonia) on Twitter, on this subject.
And the fine is steep. It actually costs 200 euros for a motorist at fault. A price much heavier than in France. No point deduction is indeed planned in France. It is also about pay 35 euros (with a reduction to 22 euros) when a motorist is caught in the act.
Staying in the middle lane on the freeway can cause a lot of problems
If this does not encourage motorists to drive in the middle lane, it’s nothing to be afraid of either. Nor will the police risk increasing the number of checks for this type of traffic violation.
However, such behavior has its dangers. Staying in the middle lane on the freeway can cause traffic delays. The flow of traffic can indeed be disturbed, since it is then necessary to cross the two lanes to overtake a motorist remaining in the middle. That also increases the risk of accidents.
