Tesla’s Autopilot has been sparking some ink for the past few months, with more unexpected braking since the last update.
Following a few accidents related to Tesla’s Autopilot, American road safety has decided to open an investigation into this advanced autonomous driving system. The problem seems far from being resolved since NHTSA has said it has received numerous complaints from Tesla drivers since the last update. It evokes an upsurge of “phantom braking”, testimonies in support.
Phantom braking is characterized by a sudden and unexpected slowing down of the vehicle when it detects a situation considered dangerous, when it is not at all. This sometimes happens when the front radars believe they detect an obstacle or a risk of collision in front of them. Thinking to do well, the Tesla brakes four irons. Sometimes the slowdown is only 10 or 15 km / h, and can be made up without scaring owners and surrounding vehicles too much. Corn in some cases, the braking can be much more abrupt and go to a stop! Some user testimonials evoke complete stops on the expressway, even as vehicles followed and almost collided with the American electric.
More and more testimonies
According to NHTSA (National Road Safety Administration), the number of complaints has been steadily increasing since the deployment of a Beta version of the last update about a month ago. The FSD (for Full Self Driving) was already regularly pointed out, but seems more than ever to worry the drivers and the authorities.
“Since I bought the car less than a month ago I have had 100 ghost brakes while I was driving with the governor.”Said a driver at the beginning of November on the platform. “The car suddenly braked for no apparent reason, as heavy weights followed closely behind. The only way to avoid the accident was to press the accelerator in an emergency. It’s incredibly dangerous”, He concludes.
Tesla does not react
Despite the complaints, Tesla doesn’t seem worried. Several user testimonials claim that they have also contacted the brand with videos of the incidents to prove their good faith. Corn no reaction from the manufacturer, apart from proposing to wait for the next update. Hopefully this one fixes the problem, at least in part …
