The collaboration between Rivian and Mercedes for the manufacture of electric utility vehicles has already ended, only three months after the signing of an agreement. Explanations.
Definitely, the collaborations between Rivian and another manufacturer do not seem to hold up over time. Announced in early September, the agreement between the American manufacturer and Mercedes lasted only three months. It is the second time that such an agreement has been suspended, after Ford last year.

In September 2022, just three months ago, the announcement of an agreement between Rivian and Mercedes Vans for the production of electric vans surprised many people. At the time, the two manufacturers evoked discussions on the sharing of production tools so that Rivian integrates a little more in Europe. Indeed, this partnership would allow the American to produce its vehicles in a Mercedes factory in Eastern Europe, to manufacture large utilities in common.
Everyone in their corner
Finally, a turnaround. Rivian announced in a press release in mid-December that it would prefer to focus its efforts on the production of its passenger cars and on existing commercial vehicle activities in the short term. The manufacturer is already engaged in North America, for the production under contract of 100,000 electric utilities delivered to Amazon by 2030. It also produces the R1T and R1S pick-ups in the USA. The production of “battery-powered” utility vehicles in Europe is therefore on hold for the moment.
For its part, Mercedes says that the new Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle manufacturing site in Jawor, Poland, is not affected by the break with Rivian. On Monday, the manufacturer at the Star indeed confirmed the creation of a new factory in Poland to produce electric vans. The group has already been manufacturing heat engines there since 2019 as well as batteries since 2021.
