Presented at the Detroit show last September, the new generation of Ford Mustang had not yet revealed all its secrets. Today it reveals the power of its different versions, from 315 to 500 hp.
The seventh generation of Ford Mustang, revealed at the Detroit show in mid-September, still kept a few secrets. Indeed, Ford had decided not to immediately specify the exact power figures, simply evoking a Dark Horse variant pushed to 500 hp. Shortly before Christmas, the constructor at the Blue Oval lifts the veil on the technical details of the new “Pony car”. It retains both its entry-level four-cylinder EcoBoost version and its large atmospheric V8 for the GT and Dark Horse variants.
More than 300 hp for the four-cylinder EcoBoost
The 2.3 EcoBoost has been completely revised according to the brand with a new engine architecture with modular power cylinder (MPC), a new bore/stroke ratio, fuel injection coupled with direct injection, variable cam timing and even a integrated exhaust gas recirculation and Twin Scroll supercharging technologies.
Ford increases the power of the supercharged block to 315 hp, against 290 hp previously. The torque is pushed to 475 Nm. Note that this engine was still sold in Europe until 2021 but had been abandoned on this date to keep only the V8, more popular with Mustang buyers on the Old Continent. The new generation of the American coupe should follow the same path.
The even more powerful naturally aspirated V8
Thus, the new Mustang should be sold with the famous “Coyote” V8 of 5 liters of displacement. This goes from 450 to 480 hp for the standard GT variant. When equipped with a performance exhaust system with active valve, the coupe even increases its power to 486 hp. This active exhaust allows you to close the valves to make a little less noise if necessary, especially in town.
Ford claims that the V8 5.0 atmo. is equipped with a dual intake and dual throttle body induction system, an improved oil pan, among others. The torque is pushed to 563 Nm on the GT version. Finally, Ford specifies that the Mustang Dark Horse is equipped with the same Coyote V8, this time enhanced with 500 hp. Phenomenal power for a naturally aspirated V8, obtained thanks to a crankshaft with forged piston rods (which already fitted the Mustang Shelby GT500) and reinforced camshafts.
Marketing in autumn 2023 in Europe.
The new Ford Mustang, still available as a coupe or convertible, will be produced at the Flat Rock (Michigan) plant in the United States. It will go on sale in the summer of 2023 in North America, while marketing in Europe will follow in the fall. The price is currently not communicated.
