4L Alpine: will Renault go to the end of its logic?

Wacky, the idea of a future Renault 4L Alpine? Not that much, Renault having already taken the initiative to attach this badge to the Austral compact SUV. So anything is possible!

For the past ten years, under the impetus of Carlos Ghosn, Renault has been striving to revive the Alpine myth, with more or less success. After having dusted off the Dieppe firm with great blows of concept cars from 2012 to 2016, 2017 finally saw the rebirth of the iconic A110, hailed by critics for its dynamic and stylistic qualities. Unfortunately, five years after its launch, the commercial results of the new Berlinette are far from living up to the hopes placed in it. Especially internationally where the Norman craftsman is fishing for lack of notoriety.

Alpine spirit in all the sauces

But Luca de Meo, who took the reins of Renault in 2020, wants to give this premium brand a chance. Hence the proliferation of sporting commitments (Formula 1, endurance championship and even rallying) with a view to preparing the ground for Alpine’s future electric range, the first model of which will begin its career by 2024-2025. But these efforts are also conditioned by the move upmarket of the Renault catalog through an Alpine Spirit finish that will become widespread on future high-finish Diamond models. The one that will gradually replace the RS Line executions has just been inaugurated on the Austral SUV, and will benefit the restyled Clio and Captur, Arkana and electric Mégane next year. Clearly, Alpine appears to be the essential lever to generate better margins on Renault models.

A 4L Alpine no less legitimate than the Austral

Therefore, everything suggests that the future electric Renault 5, expected in 2024, will offer this new coat of arms. It would also be the most legitimate of the lot, almost half a century after the iconic R5 Alpine. This is why Auto-Moto pushed the reasoning to its climax by imagining the features of a hypothetical 4L Alpine. The one that will materialize the announcement of the 4Ever concept car, in 2025, would it also be eligible for the Esprit Alpine badge? Why not, insofar as Renault did not hesitate to associate the image of the firm of Jean Rédélé with a compact SUV. In any case, to Auto-Motowe sign immediately!
