With an average of 44.7 years, Tesla customers are currently the youngest in France, far from traditional brands.
With increasingly high prices, especially for models equipped with an electric or hybrid engine, new cars are far from being accessible to everyone. And the rise in prices does not seem ready to stop, as revealed by a study published last July by Argus. In 2015, a new vehicle cost on average 25,108 €, against 26,789 € in 2021. Worse, in ten years, the average price has climbed by 7,000 €, due among other things to environmental and safety standards. Add to this the drop in purchasing power and it is therefore easy to understand why it is increasingly difficult to buy a new car for many, and especially for young people.
You will not be surprised that the average age of buyers of this type of vehicle is set at 55. However, there are some disparities between the brands, due to many parameters, such as the price or even the positioning. As astonishing as it may seem, it is Citroën which has the oldest clientele, with an average established at 62 years, as revealed by a study conducted by Autoways, relayed by Autoactu. Conversely, the youngest customers turn to Tesla, the Californian firm posting an average of 44.7 years. It was then closely followed by Seat and Cupra, who also met with great success with the youngest. Conversely, traditional brands, especially French brands, tend to attract older customers, with averages of 56.29 years for Peugeot and 58.16 years for Renault.
The allure of technology
The young age of Tesla’s customers is undoubtedly explained by its highly technological positioning, which then attracts enthusiasts of connected vehicles who are generally among the younger generations. This trend is also found among the new Chinese brands MG and Aiways, both of which have an average of around 50 years. No doubt that the novelty also attracts more young people, older customers remaining more traditional in their choices.
