Along with its civilian version, the diamond-shaped MPV is renewing its utility range. And he’s not pretending.
The progress made by the automobile in recent years is colossal. At any point of view. So what about those granted by utility vehicles in general and the Renault Kangoo in particular!
By exaggerating a bit, to go from its predecessor to this new opus is, on the scale of the private car, to jump directly from the R19 to the Mégane 4. Some would add that this abysmal gap from one generation to the next. another is easily explained here; the famous recreational vehicle had not been completely renewed since 2007! An eternity.
That said, even in one of its versions dedicated to professionals, called Van, stripped of its windows and seats at the back, the Kangoo definitely has nothing of the rustic roaring van. All the less in this TCe 130 engine which will have, to begin with, the merit of freeing itself from future diesel-prohibited zones.
Block born of the partnership forged with Daimler, it adopts the same good manners as under the hood of the sedans of the tricolor manufacturer. Quiet, guilty of almost no vibration, this 1.3 turbo 4-cylinder is very docile. Despite a maximum torque obtained from 1,500 rpm, the “take-offs” are not dazzling. A slight lack of tone is felt at the bottom of the tachometer. Note, however, that our copy had barely come out of running in, with a little less than 1000 km on the clock when it was taken in hand, and that its mechanics were probably not completely “released”.
Still, from a driving position with ergonomics refined by a seat that no longer lowers so far from the floor, a steering wheel adjustable in height and depth and a handy raised gearbox control, driving doesn’t require any special effort. The result is an almost unexpected softness from a machine of this kind.
It is once launched that this version takes the best advantage of its 130 hp by showing itself quite sparkling. Enough to provide the opportunity to witness the amazing advancements in behavior. In the presence of a sharp front axle and a serious rear, closely monitored by an authoritarian ESP (during a frank lifting of the foot in a curve for example), some will take pleasure in spinning the train of vehicles a lot. more rowdy at the controls of an anonymous utility on a small road. As a bonus, they will do so in a comfort to discourage them from ogling one of those pedantic compact SUVs with oversized rims.
Those who are most concerned about their safety will be at least as reassured by the fact that, now resting on a Scenic platform, the Kangoo can also benefit from optional driving aids such as blind spot monitoring and lane keeping assistance. The second still lacks finesse in its interventions, but the effort is commendable.
Others will be more inclined to the virtual central mirror which restores, instead of the traditional mirror, obviously inoperative on board a paneled vehicle, a quality image of the rear view.
Among other practical aspects, the Kangoo Van is especially able to do without a right side mid foot. Thus, the sliding side door and that of the front passenger open an opening nearly 1.50 m wide. Not to mention that in this configuration, the passenger seat folds down to create a flat floor and greatly facilitate access to a cargo volume that peaks at nearly 4 m3. If the Renault marketing department has made life difficult to find a name for it, this trick called Open Sesame at least simplify that of professionals handling bulky objects all the time.
In view of all its improvements, we must now hope that the Kangoo does not get into the habit of renewing itself only every fifteen years …
