The electronics trade show which opens its doors today in Las Vegas is an opportunity to preview many amazing products. Among these is Displace TV, a wireless TV that attaches to a wall or even a window with suction cups.
No need to make holes to mount your TV, just stick it directly on a wall or a window! This is what the start-up Displace is offering this year at CES 2023, which officially starts today in Las Vegas. The Displace TV is a completely wireless 55-inch 4K OLED TV that can be easily placed on any wall, according to the manufacturer.
To completely free itself from cables, this TV is powered by four batteries, which can be ejected and recharged individually without turning off the device. For connectivity, the Displace TV comes with a base station that transmits the image wirelessly. The latter uses a Wi-Fi 6E connection (up to 10.5 Gbps) and contains an AMD processor and a Nivida graphics card. A single box is enough to control several screens, whether they are installed in different rooms or assembled to form a single giant display.

A TV equipped with suction cups
The device weighs 10 kilograms and is designed to be portable and easily moved. The installation is done thanks to two large electric suction cups on the back, capable, according to the manufacturer, of fixing on any flat wall by pressing a button. The TV is delivered without remote control. Instead, it incorporates a 4K camera and is controlled by gestures. Raise your palm to pause playback, two-hand pinch to zoom, and more. If you install more than one, it is also possible to move content from one screen to another with a gesture. Also, just lift your thumb to activate follow mode, and the image follows you and displays on the nearest screen as you move.
However, a caveat should be added. A standard TV of this size consumes an average of one hundred watts. Displace says the batteries last a month at six hours a day, or a total of 18 kWh. One of the batteries with the highest density today, produced by Amprius, has an energy density of 450 Wh/kg. We would therefore be at 40 kg, just for the batteries, while the manufacturer indicates a total weight of 10 kilos. Even taking into account the fact that it is an OLED panel and that the image processing is carried out by the base station, this seems unrealistic.
A production limited to 100 copies
Another error, the manufacturer’s site indicates that it is possible to assemble four screens to create a 220-inch image with 16K definition, while four 55-inch 4K screens assembled form a 110-inch display, with 8K definition, which is already more than enough. We will therefore have to wait for the return of the first customers to know the real autonomy and to know if the TV keeps its other promises… In the meantime, the firm announces that it is working on a new version without edge to facilitate the assembly of several screens, the integration wireless charging, and the publication of an API (programming interface) to allow third-party developers to create applications.
Displace limits production to only 100 copies, which will therefore have to be reserved in advance. Count 2,999 dollars for a TV with a box. The manufacturer also offers packs with a box and two TVs for $5,399, or with a box and four TVs for $8,999. Delivery is scheduled for December 2023.
