Goodyear has announced that it is working on a tire that consists almost entirely of recycled materials. A version with 70% is close to commercialization.
The days of natural rubber tires are numbered. Indeed, tire manufacturers are all working on more sustainable solutions. This is the case of Goodyear, which is increasing the percentage of recycled materials in its products, and will continue to do so.
The American tire specialist had already announced in early 2022 the launch of a tire that is made up of 70% sustainable materials. This first product is already manufactured by Goodyear today and offers less rolling resistance than conventional tires.
This obviously makes it possible to reduce consumption, and therefore to increase the duration of a full or refill. This is a crucial asset for electric cars, which are often criticized for a lack of autonomy.
The new tire presented by Goodyear consists precisely of soybean oil and recycled water bottles. The assembly makes up 90% of tire material. The manufacturer explains that it is soy intended to feed animals. The oil that accompanies it is an easy product to recover.
These are the belt pads that Goodyear makes with plastic water bottles. This benefits from a recycling treatment to form what is commonly called the “cord” of the tire. This tire will still need to undergo development testing, and Goodyear hopes to achieve 100% recycled materials by 2030.
