The State had set itself the goal of reaching 100,000 charging points in 2021. At the end of 2022, the account was still not there…
In October 2020, the government made a commitment to develop the charging network in order to encourage the French to buy 100% electric cars and, to a lesser extent, rechargeable hybrids. Objective: 100,000 terminals before the end of 2021. The contract should be respected… but only in the course of 2023.
Fast growing but slowing down a bit
Let it be said, we are not very far from it. As of December 31, 2022, there were very precisely 87,107 charging points open to the public according to the count of the national association for the development of electric mobility, Avere. Knowing that 28,440 new points were created last year, we should in all likelihood reach 115,000 charging points by the end of 2023. Finally, if we follow the same trajectory…
Except that, if growth was rapid in 2022 with an increase of 53%, we note that it was 64% in 2021. And this slight drop is worrying insofar as new parameters are now to be taken into account. account. At the time in 2020, when this ambition was born, the State was not campaigning so much for electricity, all alternative solutions were encouraged: non-rechargeable hybrids, flexifuel e85 engines, LPG, etc. Now that the ban on the sale of thermal cars has been enacted for 2035, and that it is a European agreement, there is an urgent need to act on the subject. In other words, there should have been an acceleration in 2022.
1 terminal for 13 electrified cars
We console ourselves as we can by noting that the growth of charging stations (+166% between the end of December 2020 and the end of December 2022) was stronger than that of the fleet of electrified cars (+134.5%, 1,102,975 vehicles zero emissions and plug-in hybrids in total in 2022). But roughly speaking, today there is 1 terminal for 13 vehicles. No need to be an expert on the subject to understand that this is clearly not enough to push the French to get started.
