A 26-year-old man was arrested after a chase in the streets of Reims on Friday January 13. While drunk, he hit 16 cars with his flatbed truck.
To be a driver or to respect the rules, it is obviously necessary to choose. The driver of a flatbed truck learned it at his expense, this Friday evening, January 13, in Reims. After recovering a 4X4 on its plateau, the man stops with his family to a hearty meal. However, he claims to be able to get back behind the wheel. Weary, on his way, he meets the police. What makes it « fou »in his words, quoted by L’Union Reims :
“It’s a habit, every time I drink, I’m not aware of the consequences. When I saw the police, I went crazy, I was in my world. »
A carnage, 16 cars hit
So the man decides to speed up. He then hit a first car, parked in double line. 15 more will follow, most of them being hit by the poorly secured 4×4 he is transporting. The latter indeed exceed one meter on the side and will eventually come off.
Not enough to stop the driver. The latter continued on his way, ran through ten red lights and climbs up to 130 km/h in the city center ! He finally takes the direction of the highway. Surprise, while we can expect him to blow up the barrier, he stops at the toll to take a ticket!
A short stop, enough for law enforcement to position themselves and arrest him. The police men, gun in hand, ordered him to get out of the vehicle. In this last, the driver revs his engine… then gives in and lets himself be stopped.
The driver sleeps in jail
When questioned, the 26-year-old swore that he would not be caught again. His record, eight convictions including six for traffic offenses while intoxicated, however, did not play in his favor. He was thus sentenced to fifteen months in prison. A sentence accompanied by a warrant of committal, for the refusal to comply in recidivism. Drink-driving recidivism has also cost 24 months imprisonment.
His license was cancelled, his truck confiscated. It will also have to settle, among other things, a fine of 500 euros related to the lack of control of his vehicle. The prosecutor finally summarizes what emerges from this story:
“One of the vehicles struck was thrown five meters before falling with a very loud crash. What would have happened if there had been a pedestrian? We came close to tragedy, it’s a miracle that there were no deaths. »
