Ford will quickly abandon Volkswagen's electric platform

Ford will launch two SUVs based on Volkswagen’s MEB platform. But then he will use his own bases.

Ford and Volkswagen have multiplied joint projects in recent years. These first focused on utility vehicles and pick-ups, then were extended to electric vehicles. Ford will thus use the MEB platform, the basis of the Volkswagen group dedicated to trendy models.

Ford’s first electric model based on MEB will be an SUV with a size similar to the Volkswagen ID.4. It will be unveiled in a few weeks. Then in 2024 there will be a sports crossover. These two vehicles will be assembled at Ford. The firm has invested two billion dollars to adapt its factory in Cologne, Germany. And to make room on this site, she didn’t hesitate to mark the end of the Fiesta!

Ford intends to quickly become a 100% electric brand here. But the rest of the program will be done without the help of Volkswagen. In an interview given to Automobilewoche, Martin Sanders, head of Ford’s electrical division, confirmed that models launched after these SUVs will have Ford bases. The leader explains that the MEB has allowed Ford to accelerate its electrification by saving two years of development time. From 2026, the manufacturer plans to sell 600,000 electric vehicles each year in Europe.

After Cologne, it is the Valencia site in Spain that will undergo a profound transformation. Mid-2022, Ford confirmed that this site will host a new electrical architecture. But Martin Sanders did not want to specify the models that will come out of the chains.
