Become the benchmark for electric cars? This is one of BMW’s objectives, as its CEO says.

The electric car segment is bubbling, and all players want to take Tesla’s place on its throne in the collective unconscious. Because with a few years ahead of the global competition, the Palo Alto firm has become the benchmark in the industry, whether in terms of performance, efficiency, charging and price. So many criteria that BMW intends to apply.

During a recent speech at CES in Las Vegas, Oliver Zipse, CEO of the German brand, said that the next wave of BMW electric cars will be the benchmark for the segment in terms of autonomy, charging speed and price. Strong and assumed words which, if they materialize, would relegate Tesla to the background.

New batteries to push BMW to the top of the hierarchy

It is in reference to the new Neue Klasse platform of the BMW i Vision Dee Concept that the boss of the brand indicated the roadmap for the future. Entirely designed for electric mobility, it will turn a page in the history of the manufacturer, which continues for the moment to use electrified thermal platforms.

But it’s more in terms of the battery that BMW plans to step on the accelerator with both feet. Initially, the manufacturer will use cylindrical cells supplied by EVE to improve the density of its units and their performance. But it is on the subject of solid batteries that BMW plans to take advantage, in order to become the pole star of the segment. See you in 2025 when the first concretizations of the Neue Klasse project appear.
