While fuel prices are exploding again in France, Pierre Chasseray, spokesperson for the association 40 Millions d’Automobilistes, defends a reduction in taxation on these products.
On January 14, Pierre Chasseray, spokesperson for the association 40 Millions d’Automobilistes, published a column in the Sunday newspaper. The latter dealt fuel prices, which are exploding againwhile the discount at the pump disappeared on January 1.
The author of the text defends a sustainable measure on fuel prices for all motorists. Reason why he is campaigning for lower taxes. This while short-term aid follows one another:
“We need a sustainable measure on fuels. In 2012, Jean-Marc Ayrault had already acted for a drop in fuel taxation on an ad hoc basis. Because, already at the time, in a context of soaring oil prices, the French found themselves taken by the throat. Then we had the yellow vests. Then, last year, checks, reductions, rebates and there, again a check. It says that since 2012, we haven’t evolved. »
Reduce VAT or TICPE on fuels
In detail, Pierre Chasseray would like a reduction in VAT or TICPE. The first could go from 21% to 5.5%, if the fuels were considered a first-class product. Alas, it has to be done at the European level. The second, on the other hand, could be reduced by twenty cents without discussion with the other members of the European Union:
“If we proposed a reduction in the tax on fuels to 5.5%, up to basic necessities, it would be a saving of 22 cents. Or seven billion, ladle. The problem is that we are in European law, we cannot do everything. It is likely that the 5.5% VAT could pass on a European scale. If this is not done, we simply propose a reduction in the TICPE of around twenty centimes. Which means that with the VAT effect, we would be on exactly the same proportion. That is to say a reduction of 22 cents on fuel prices. »
“Nor should we promise the moon to people (…) We can act on taxation. All European rankings show France between 3rd and 5th position in terms of fuel taxation. We puncture too much, that’s why it’s not acceptable. We are proposing to return to the level of taxation ten years ago. »
Since 2010, the state has made seven billion more thanks to fuel taxes
Remember that in 2010, the State levied approximately 34 billion euros per year through fuel taxes. It is 41 billion at present, with VAT and TICPE on these products. Seven billion more, seven billion too much according to Pierre Chasseray. He is therefore campaigning for a return to the taxation in place in 2012. Before it was increased under the Hollande and Macron presidencies:
“In 2010, under Sarkozy, the State levied 34 billion euros of tax per year with fuels, with VAT and TICPE. Today it is 41 billion. Because in the meantime, under Hollande and during the first years of Emmanuel Macron, we increased taxation on both fuels, gasoline and diesel. It generated seven billion more in revenue for the state. It is seven billion too much that the government takes, which means that we end up with soaring prices. We have to find an acceptable system. »
With his tribune, the author hopes to attract the attention of Emmanuel Macron, while the social crisis is rumbling:
“To be honest, I don’t see how Emmanuel Macron could have missed it. I hope he will hear it and understand the very clear link between low emission zones and fuel prices. We are in a social context which is boiling, I think that these two files are extremely inflammable. »
