In a bitter statement, Marcello Gandini says he strongly disagrees with Lamborghini over the new Countach.
A few months ago, Lamborghini lifted the veil on the whole new Countach, a special series based on the Sian and sold only a handful of copies worldwide. Creating the surprise, this new version had somewhat confused, and had not failed to challenge the public, some adoring this reinterpretation, others being much less enthusiastic. And among them is a personality from the automotive world, who is none other than Marcello Gandini. If you don’t know who he is, know that he is neither more nor less than the daddy of the Lancia Stratos, the Renault Super Cinq as well as the Citroën BX. But also and above all behind the iconic design of the legendary Lamborghini Countach.
We could therefore have thought that this modern reinterpretation appealed to him, and that he had invested in its development, from near or far. Well it seems not. In any case, this is precisely what the Italian designer denounces in a salty press release, against his former employer. He then emphasizes that he was not consulted for the creation of this limited series, and returns to an anecdote unknown to enthusiasts. He remembers an interview given on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Countach, during which he is given a model of the new version. Except that at that point, no one told him that it was a production model, thinking he was just facing a concept. He denounces this lack of information, even this lie. But not only.
Against his values
Because the designer has other things to say to Lamborghini, and affirms loud and clear that he did not participate and does not approve this project, for which he was in no way consulted. But he does not stop there, stressing that this new version is totally far from its values: “ I built my whole identity as a designer, especially when I was working on Lamborghini supercars, around a particular concept. Every new model I designed had to be an innovation, something completely different from the previous models. (…) Taking a model from the past represents for me the negation of the fundamental principles of my DNA ”.
It only remains to wait for Lamborghini’s response … unless the brand decides to ignore the situation, when all copies of this Lamborghini Countach have been sold.
