Alpine wants to launch two large electric SUVs. For the platform, he could turn to Lotus, with which he is already working on an electric coupe.
Luca de Meo, managing director of the Renault group, has big ambitions for Alpine. While the brand sold 3,500 vehicles in 2022, it intends to cross the 100,000 mark by the end of the decade. To achieve this, Alpine will greatly expand its offer. From a single model, the A110, the range will increase to at least five in the next 5/6 years. And these novelties will be electric.
In addition, there will be a majority of SUVs. After the city car derived from the R5, scheduled for 2024, Alpine will launch its first crossover in 2025, a sports machine which, according to Luca de Meo’s description, will integrate the C+ segment, i.e. large compacts.
Then there will be two other larger SUVs. These projects were confirmed by the group’s boss in November. These machines will join the E and D segments, and will allow Alpine to conquer new markets, in particular the United States.
It remains to find a platform for these machines, which will measure nearly 5 meters in length. If the first crossover will have the CMF-EV base, inaugurated on the Renault side by the electric Mégane, this platform does not seem to be intended for large SUVs.
For them, there is the Lotus track. An option confirmed by Laurent Rossi, boss of Alpine, with the media Autocar. For him, the English manufacturer is a natural partner. And it makes sense: Alpine and Lotus are already working on a joint project, one that should give birth to an electric sports coupe, which will replace the A110 on the French side.
Lotus also has what it takes in store, since the manufacturer, owned by Chinese Geely, has just launched the Eletre, an XXL electric SUV. Alpine could therefore resume its underwear. Laurent Rossi already recognizes that these cars cannot be pure sports cars, given the size and weight, but that they will have good performance and will retain good agility, made possible in particular by an individualized distribution of torque to each wheel.
