Alfa Romeo had a rather good financial year in 2022. But there is nothing to be proud of…

At last ! after years of decline, Alfa Romeo seems to see the end of the tunnel. The 2022 results are quite good, the commercial results of the Italian brand are undoubtedly better. But can we really say that she is out of trouble?

Registrations up 27.2% in Europe in 2022

In a still struggling European market, Alfa Romeo performed much better than average. We told you just yesterday that it is quite simply the 2nd brand to have progressed the most with sales up 27.2% compared to 2021. In France, the rise is even more spectacular since they simply doubled, while the market fell by 7.8%.

Lancia still ahead…

But we were going very far. It must be said that 3,090 Alfa Romeos were delivered to their owners in 2022. It remains almost anecdotal. A manufacturer like Honda, which is not very popular in our area, did better with 5,438 units sold. Mazda, also very discreet in France, sold twice as many vehicles (7,040 models). So, it’s true, let’s recognize that their respective range is more extensive. But this does not explain everything.

At the European level, the sentence is even more cruel. Lancia, which only sells one and only one car (the Ypsilon) in a single country (Italy, it goes without saying) has done better: 41,077 registrations in 2022, 29,870 for the brand at Biscione. DS, although younger, also with 45,582 models sold. The premium Germans, let’s not talk about them, they are light years ahead of Alfa Romeo. The only small consolation prize, it passed Lexus, which looked gray last year with 26,747 units sold, -15.7% compared to 2021.

And the Tonale in all this?

Obviously, the Milan manufacturer would not have progressed to this point without the Tonale. When we add a third model to the equation, the balance can only be positive. But it is clear that the first results are not breathtaking. It is true, this is not its first full year, it will be necessary to wait until the end of the 2023 financial year to fully measure its commercial performance.

At European level, however, 8,925 copies were sold from January to November 2022 (we do not yet have the figures for December). The Stelvio is still ahead with 14,818 units. Even if the Tonale manages to double its sales in 2023, it shouldn’t be far ahead of it.

In France, today is Alfa Romeo’s first sale. Almost twice as many Tonale (1,788) sold as Stelvio (915), although the former only entered the concessions at the start of the summer. Not too bad. But even Alpine sold more copies of its A110 berlinetta (2,138)…
