The Alpine A110 revises its range with a more powerful and faster S version. What reinforce the comparison with the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 coupe, yet stronger on paper.
Alpine, now well relaunched since the return of the A110 in 2017, will soon transform into a 100% electric brand. But before that, the Dieppe manufacturer is reviewing the range of its only model, the A110. Now, the modern berlinetta has three versions: the “basic” A110 with 252 hp, and the A110 GT and A110 S with 300 hp (instead of 292 hp previously) for the more athletic. Thanks to these few additional horses, the coupe improves its performance, and gets even closer to the enemy to be destroyed: the Porsche 718 Cayman. A real David-style duel against Goliath …
The German coupe received at the Los Angeles Motor Show the reinforcement of a more powerful GT4 RS variant (and the Clubsport racing version) with an atmospheric 4.0 six-cylinder with 500 hp taken from the 911 GT3. With this cavalry, he brought down the 0 to 100 km / h in only 3.4 s. The “classic” Cayman GT4, capped at 420 hp, reaches 100 km / h in 3.9 s with the PDK gearbox, or in 4.4 s with a manual gearbox. Values closer to those of the new Alpine A110, which performs the exercise in 4.2 s for the A110 S and 4.5 s for the 252 hp A110. Once again, confirmation that weight is central.
Performance: weight, a major factor
Indeed, the Alpine derives its performance from a modest four-cylinder 1.8 turbo with 300 hp, associated with an automatic 7-speed dual-clutch transmission from Getrag. The torque oscillates between 320 and 340 Nm. Not a lightning of war therefore, vis-a-vis a Porsche equipped with an atmospheric six-cylinder more powerful on paper. Corn thanks to its weight contained between 1,102 kg and 1,140 kg, the Dieppoise is as nervous as the Porsche, much heavier. The German is at 1,450 kg for the classic 718 Cayman GT4, and even 1,415 kg in its new GT4 RS version.
The Alpine A110 S takes advantage of the arrival of its new range to offer an optional aero kit similar to that of the Cayman GT4 and GT4 RS, with in particular a fixed carbon spoiler in back. Even if it is less imposing than that of the Porsches and does not offer the beautiful “gooseneck” of the RS version, this appendix allows the French to gain in stability with a load gain of 81 kg on the rear. and 60 kg on the front thanks to the carbon blade as well. That is 141 kg of support in total. Thanks to these changes, the Alpine can reach the maximum speed of 275 km / h, against 250 to 260 km / h on the A110 without aero kit. Certainly, the Porsche does better with up to 304 km / h for the GT4 version.
Interior: further customization at Porsche, but at a high price
On board, the Alpine is reviewing its multimedia system, which is more intuitive and compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It is now possible to update it remotely, which will allow it to receive a Wifi connection afterwards. The interior, almost identical since 2017, can still accommodate some refinements such as a comfort pack with six-way adjustable seats and dressed in black leather. A microfiber pack (on A110 GT and A110 S only) covers the steering wheel, headliner, center console and dashboard in black microfiber, which can contrast with the orange seat belts specific to the A110 S.
At Porsche, the universe is quite close with an enveloping dashboard marked by a central console that extends between the two seats. Corn the possibilities of customization are more numerous : semi-leather or leather interior with contrasting stitching, electric seats with multiple adjustable or full bucket, seat belts and colored dashboard inserts… On the other hand, customization has its limits and can be drawn from the extensive catalog of options. quickly increase the overall bill.
Price: the more affordable A110
Where the Alpine beats the Porsche is on the price side. The old Alpine range, between 252 and 292 hp, ranged from € 55,800 to € 66,500. The new range could well increase its prices by a few hundred euros, but will always remain more affordable than the German coupe. The classic 718 Cayman starts at € 59,692, with a 300 hp four-cylinder that performs worse than the Alpine. But to acquire a more muscular GT4 version, it will be necessary to put the hand in the wallet. The “classic” GT4 is priced at € 103,267, while the 718 Cayman GT4 RS claims a minimum of € 144,485. A salty price, to which must be added the penalty!
