Lightyear decided to suspend the assembly of the 0, in order to concentrate its attention and its resources on the 2, whose number of reservations explodes.
In early December, Lightyear launched production of the 0, its first model. Automobile-Propre was also able to visit the manufacturing site of this large electric sedan equipped with solar panels to gain autonomy. But now the assembly of the 0 has already been stopped.
The brand announces it itself in a press release. The reason ? The Lightyear 2. This is the next model from the Dutch firm, which should be much more affordable. The 2 is indeed promised at less than 40,000 €, with a record autonomy at this price, of around 800 km.
Enough to attract attention… and reservations. These were launched at the beginning of 2023 and it is a real plebiscite. Lightyear announces that it has received 40,000 requests from individual customers and around 20,000 from fleets. Arval, for example, asked for 10,000.
Faced with this potential success, Lightyear has therefore decided to focus its attention and resources on the development of the 2. Even if it means sacrificing the 0, even if the brand is still talking about a suspension of production. The 0 was to be produced in limited quantities, with 1,000 copies. The price was XXL: €250,000.
Given the initial investment and the selling price, it may seem strange not to deliver to customers who have placed an order. Unless they also wanted to go to the 2, much cheaper!
If the story seems to end prematurely for the 0, the model was not useless, because it must be seen as a technological demonstrator for the firm, a kind of concept car produced in small series. The 2 will owe him a lot.
