The Renault Espace will return to center stage, but not exactly in the form we imagine. Explanations.
The rumors were therefore founded. While the specialized press has been spreading this noise in the corridors for many months, Renault has finally let go by formalizing the name of its new model intended for large families at the end of January. As the fifth generation of Espace prepares to bow out, we learn that its name will survive it, but in a completely different form.
Less and less minivan type
Espace V, which appeared in 2015, had already caused a stir when it was revealed. Feeling the tide turn as customers of minivans turned away from them in favor of SUVs, he had chosen a subtle in-between, in terms of silhouette, even if it means sacrificing most of the habitability and of the modularity that made the success of its ancestors. But with a length of 4.86 m, it was still very roomy.
The Peugeot 5008 in the viewfinder
In 2023, fans of the first generations of Space may once again be disillusioned. Indeed, the sixth opus that Renault expected next spring will completely turn its back on the minivan profile to reposition itself in the 7-seater SUV segment, like a Peugeot 5008. Just as the latter is extrapolated from a 3008 , Espace 2023 will quite simply resemble an Austral stretched out by about twenty centimeters to coincide with the size of the core of the segment evolving around 4.70 m. That is a reduction of about fifteen centimeters compared to the old Espace.
Reduced habitability
Therefore, do not expect miracles in terms of interior design. And in particular in the 3rd row which, on Espace 5, still offered honorable seats in terms of comfort and access. On this derivative of Austral, it is to be feared that simple removable folding seats from the floor will officiate in the trunk, with the sole purpose of helping out two adults on short journeys. At best, it will be able to accommodate young children over long distances. As for the luggage, it will be necessary to tighten the belt, in comparison with the carrying capacity of the previous model.
An unprecedented hybridization
In terms of style, the new Espace will take us on familiar ground, as it is simply an elongated Austral which will incorporate most of the body parts of the short version. It will be the same edge where we will find the famous L-shaped digital console. Finally, under the hood, the slightly hybridized blocks of 130 and 160 hp will be renewed, as well as the full-hybrid derivative of 200 hp. Note, however, the arrival of a more vigorous engine, this time rechargeable hybrid, which should develop around 280 hp.
Renault Espace price
If the revelation of the new Renault Espace is expected next spring, its marketing should not take place before the start of the school year. In terms of pricing, expect an entry-level price of around €36,000 for 5-seaters, and just under €38,000 with two additional seats.
