Ford could sell its Saarlouis plant in Germany. What would interest the Chinese BYD, which seeks to produce in Europe.

In the midst of restructuring, Ford is about to cut thousands of jobs in Europe. And that’s not all: the manufacturer is considering parting with a large factory in Germany, that of Saarlouis. This is currently responsible for the production of the Focus. But the manufacturer has already recorded the non-renewal of this model, yet emblematic.

Ford intends to focus on SUVs and electric vehicles. There will only be this type of vehicle in the European range in 2030. A good part will still be assembled in Europe. The manufacturer is currently transforming its Cologne site to produce two crossovers built on Volkswagen’s MEB base. He also announced that the Spanish site in Valencia will be adapted to the production of electricity.

Saarlouis is therefore sidelined. Once production of the Focus is finished in 2025, this factory could be transferred to another brand. According to the Wall Street Journal, among the interested buyers, there is Chinese BYD. Ford representatives are reportedly preparing to meet with Chinese counterparts in a few days. Ford wants to find a solution for Saarlouis by spring, in particular to give visibility to employees.

After seeing its sales soar at home, BYD has big international ambitions. With a turnkey site, almost, BYD would find an ideal way to quickly produce passenger cars in Europe, a wish it made known a few months ago. The manufacturer has just launched in France with three electric vehicles, including the Atto 3 compact SUV.
