BMW unveils its XM concept, foreshadowing the high-performance plug-in hybrid SUV in its Motorsport range. His power ? 750 hp!
BMW Motorsport officially presents its XM concept a few hours before the opening of Art Basel Miami, a major art fair in the United States where it will be exhibited for the first time. This high-performance SUV will be the BMW’s first plug-in hybrid model.
A future new model for the BMW M branch
For its fiftieth anniversary, the BMW M division therefore chooses to launch a new model, after having tried the experiment for the first time between 1978 and 1981 with the M1. Following an agreement between the two brands, the SUV bears the name of a Citroën sedan from the 1990s, yet has nothing to do with it. Huge template, 23-inch rims, prominent black lacquered grille with illuminated double bean, sharp dual-stage look like the future restyled X7 …
On board, we find the atmosphere of the M models with a cockpit facing the driver. The front seats are in brown leather, and are complemented by copper and carbon fiber dashboard inserts. A huge latest-generation iDrive curved screen sits on the dashboard, like the BMW iX. On the latter, the screen facing the driver measures 12.3 inches while the multimedia system is displayed on a second contiguous panel of 14.9 inches.
750 hp and 80 km of electric autonomy
Under the hood, the BMW XM is equipped with a petrol V8 and an electric motor. The full technical characteristics are not disclosed, but we know that the whole develops the cumulative power of 750 hp. The torque is also phenomenal with 1000 Nm. Thanks to its battery, the capacity unknown for the moment since it is still a concept, BMW M announces a range of 80 km.
BMW Motorsport’s XM concept will be transformed into a production model by the end of 2022. Production will take place at the manufacturer’s American plant in Spartanburg (South Carolina), where several SUVs such as the X3, X5 or X7 are already produced.
