The sales charts for electric cars in Europe were turned upside down last year. There is a new champion.
According to data from Jato (a specialist in car sales figures), just over 11 million cars were delivered in Europe last year. While overall deliveries fell by 4.1%, those of electric vehicles continued to grow. 1.56 million connected models were registered, compared to 1.21 million in 2021. Their market share has thus increased from 10.3 to 13.9%.
Some countries are ahead, starting of course with Norway, where 79% of vehicles sold last year were electric! It was 33% in Sweden, 23% in the Netherlands and already 18% in Germany. France is in the European average.
But the European electric car market is dominated by American cars. We already had a Tesla at the top of the rankings in 2021, the Model 3. And now there are two! Except that it is no longer the 3 on the highest step of the podium, it has been doubled by the Model Y, of which 137,000 units have been delivered on the Old Continent. The electric SUV thus sold better than the Renault Captur or the Nissan Qashqai!
The 3 is second, with 91,475 sales. His score, however, fell by 35%, his brother diverting customers. The podium is completed by the Volkswagen ID.4 and its 67,490 deliveries. The German was closely followed by the Fiat 500, which succeeded in its electric conversion: 66,198 copies were registered in 2022.
Then there is the Volkswagen ID.3, with 53,015 copies, down 24%. She lost two places in the standings. After the Skoda Enyaq, there is another success, the low-cost Spring, which sold 48,535 copies. It is thus ahead of the Peugeot e-208, Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro!

The big downfall is the Renault Zoé, number 1 for a long time, and again second in 2022. It fell to 12th place, with sales halved, to 35,706 sales. It is behind the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Consolation for Renault, the electric Mégane has started its life well, already being 14th with 32,641 sales, while deliveries began at the end of spring.
Just behind, we must salute the score of the Cupra Born, with more than 32,000 models delivered! Among the good surprises, we also have the 29,066 Volvo XC40 or the fact that BMW sells more iX (24,500) than iX3 (22,000) while the model is very expensive.
On the other hand, the scores are more disappointing for the electric Citroën C4 (20,000 sales), the Mercedes EQC (17,200) or the Mazda MX-30 (5,900).
