Tesla’s self-driving mode is considered dangerous in some cases by US authorities. They require the brand to update all vehicles equipped with this option in the country.
Mass vehicle recalls are frequent and common for brands. What is less so is when this recall is not done at the dealership, but via a software update. This is what will happen to 362,758 carscars of the S, X, Y range and Model 3 for Tesla in the United States. This update imposed by the United States Highway Traffic Safety Agency (NHTSA) concerns the beta version of the Full self-driving mode (FSD), i.e. the Tesla autonomous driving software, otherwise known as Autopilot. This option is priced at $15,000 in the United States.
The agency considers that, due to malfunctions, the vehicle behaves potentially dangerously at intersections. With this device, the car can continue in a straight line when it enters an exit where it is supposed to follow the curve. The Tesla can also switch to amber lights without slowing down, or not stopping when there is a stop sign. Always with this mode, at the level of the management of the vitessevitesse, the car does not necessarily anticipate changes in limitation. It does not restrict it either when the authorized speed is deliberately exceeded by the driver.
An Autopilot not fully autonomous
For the moment, it should be remembered that this expensive system remains in the test phase. It is a so-called level 2 software, that is to say that its operation is not supposed to be completely autonomous. It is more a matter of driving assistance. Tesla had recalled during an investigation into its Autopilot by the American justice, that the system should only be used if the driver is ready to regain control at any time.
In June, the NHTSA had already expressed its concern over the considerable proportion of accidentsaccidents involving autonomous driving mode. Thus, in the United States, the FSD was engaged in the case of 273 accidents. WhileElon MuskElon Musk touted the arrival of this completely autonomous driving system, the reality therefore calls for caution. A caution which is also reflected in a reaction from the stock market, since the price of Tesla immediately plummeted by 5.69% on Thursday, after this announcement.
