Ola to build India’s largest electric vehicle factory

26 de February de 2023
in Car
Ola factory in Tamil Nadu

Ola is one of the big winners of electric vehicle development in India. It is taking advantage of the enthusiasm around its products to set up a new factory in the state of Tamil Nadu. It will be the largest electric vehicle factory in India.

Launched in 2021, the first electric scooters from Ola, the Indian equivalent of Uber, met with rapid success. Building on this success, the group intends to switch to electric cars and its first models should be presented this year. Scooters or cars will in future be produced under the same roof. This explains the gigantism of the industrial site announced in addition to the factory already existing in the region.

It will be the largest electric vehicle production site in India. Located in the state of Tamil Nadu (districts of Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri) in the south of the country, it could be the largest EV production site in the world. In any case, this is what the company proclaims with 800 hectares and an investment of 76 billion rupees (7.6 crores – 860 million euros).

3 cars in project

And things will go quickly, since production should start at the end of the year, to start a rate of 2 million scooters per year, and 10 million from 2025. Motorcycles are also planned. Automobile production would begin in 2024, with no announcement regarding capacity.

Remember that Ola plans to present 3 electric cars in the coming months: two sedans and an SUV that will cover the C and D segments, with batteries estimated at around 80/90 kWh and a range of 500 km. If the brand practices fairly low prices with its two wheels, the electric car market is still too limited in India to reach large volumes with dedicated vehicles.

The industrial park will also accommodate equipment manufacturers, but also the production of batteries. Ola intends to produce its own NMC2170 cells on site.

Of course, such production capacity will not be dedicated to the local market. The brand’s electric scooters are already exportedand his cars will be too.
