Mercedes collaborates with Google for its new navigation system

Mercedes announces a partnership with the giant Google for its multimedia system, in particular with navigation and autonomous driving assistants.

While some car manufacturers are now calling on Google to create their entire multimedia system under Android Automotive, Mercedes is more cautious and prefers to keep its independence by calling on the California giant only in part. The manufacturer with the Star announces that it is forging a long-term partnership with Google to create “the next generation of digital luxury car experience”, while keeping its own MB.OS interface.

The collaboration with Google therefore mainly concerns the navigation part of its multimedia system, which remains specific to Mercedes unlike Volvo or Renault for example. The system takes over the on-board data and navigation capabilities of the Google Maps system. Thus, Mercedes will be able to rely on very detailed information on the locations (opening hours, reviews, etc.), real-time and predictive traffic information, automatic rerouting, etc. The German manufacturer also announces the implementation of the YouTube application automatically in certain markets. These two functions, including that of points of interest on Maps called Google Place Details, will be available on current models through an update.

Autonomous driving aid

Subsequently, Mercedes will also use data from Google Maps to activate autonomous driving functions such as automatic speed adjustment before intersections, roundabouts or turns. Mercedes is one of the first manufacturers to embark on level 3 autonomous driving (authorized up to 60 km / h on the current S-Class), and could further develop its system thanks to new sensors and other Lidar.

The complete MB.OS operating system, which will integrate other functionalities, is expected on the new generation of compact Mercedes, in the middle of the decade. These will embark on an unprecedented MMA platform, which the future EQA (an electric version of the future CLA) will use for example from 2024. But before that, a first taste of the Mercedes MB.OS will be given this year by the new generation of Class E, whose interior has just been revealed with a few surprises: optional screen facing the passenger, 5G connection, voice recognition, selfie camera, TikTok and Zoom applications or video games like Angry Birds integrated…
