Ban on thermal cars in 2035: "no turning back possible" according to a MEP

The European Parliament recently voted to ban the sale of thermal cars in Europe from 2035. Can we still expect a final turnaround? Not according to Karima Delli, MEP, member of the Group of the Greens and the European Free Alliance, and chair of the Committee on Transport and Tourism

“I find this totally new in public policy. »

Last week, after a few months of deliberation, the European Parliament voted in favor of banning the sale of new thermal cars in 2035. In 2035, CO2 emissions from new cars and vans under 3.5 tonnes must be equal to 0 g/km. A vote you’re happy about?

“So first of all, it is a historic decision which was not taken only by the European Parliament, it was ratified by the European Parliament but also by the Member States. It’s a real agreement that required a lot of work and intelligence because it’s a historic agreement. That is to say that the automotive industry, which has more than 150 years of heat engines, will move on to another phase. And that’s where it’s rather clever because it reconciles this imagination that we could have where we had the impression that the automobile and the climate were, as I tend to say, two enemy brothers . On the contrary, it is a transition agreement, which in my opinion falls under ecological planning. I find this totally new in public policy. »

“We are not going to go back on this decision”

Is there no turning back possible? Italy, for example, has expressed its dissatisfaction, it is also the only country within the EU where EV sales were down last year…

“No, no more going back. Anyway, the real question is that when it’s done, it’s done. Some countries can issue claims but, as a general rule, we will not go back on this decision. I’m pretty sure today. The real question now is to monitor, to look very closely at how the Member States are going to apply this agreement. »

“Combustion cars will continue to run in 2035! »

Does the agreement leave a way out for other alternative solutions? What about fuels like LPG or E85? What about synthetic fuels?

“I remind you that the electric car is not the real solution to all mobility problems. It is one solution among many others. Everyone believes that there will be no more thermals from 2035. However, they will continue to roll. Second thing, we are not going to get out of fossil fuels to repile on other fossil fuels. Synthetic fuels is a sector that has not developed at all. And it is rather watched on large sizes, peak sectors including aviation. The real energy mix will be played out on other issues, on the question of green hydrogen for example. But there are also other things to do, such as the opening of the retrofit market.
