Thermal radars for carpooling: what fine for offenders?

With the deployment of thermal radars, zoom in on the fine to which motorists are exposed if they do not respect carpooling lanes.

For the past few weeks, a new type of radar has been making headlines. It’s about thermal turrets, supposed to control carpooling. They aim to control proper use of the lanes reserved for this mode of transport and to flash motorists who do not respect them. In this case, they would be subject to a fine.

Indeed, motorists who do not respect the proper use of a carpooling lane can be fined 135 euros. Either a 4th class fine, which can be reduced to 90 euros and increased to 375 euros.

Until now, drivers using a carpool lane illegally suffered a simple point of order. The license plate number of the vehicle was thus inscribed on the displays, with a message recalling the law. A measure that is often ineffective. Could the fine change things?

To do this, the radars will detect the thermal signature of users on board the vehicle. This by means of thermal sensors. This will thus allow control cars with tinted windows. A doubt remains however on a type of control: that of babies in cozy seats, placed back to the road. The radar can obviously encounter difficulties in detecting this type of passenger. Which could lead to errors.

Remember that the carpooling lanes are reserved for motorists who are at least two in their vehicle, public transport, taxis and zero-emission vehicles (Crit’Air 0, 100% hydrogen or electric).

They are generally located on the left lanes, in both directions. They are marked with a road sign sometimes bright, made of a white diamond. They are also not always open and may be inaccessible at times.
