Emmanuel Macron’s campaign promise at the start of 2022, the project of a electric car rental at 100 euros per month remains subject to debate. Pierre Chasseray, spokesperson for the association 40 Millions d’Automobilistes, thinks in particular that this project is impossible to implement :
” It is not possible. €100 per month, for a car with real autonomy? Chick! This is not possible, or there will be very specific conditions. This will be off battery rental, for example. 100 euros is about the price of renting the battery alone today. »
“We can put in place a system at the end of 2023 that is opaque. The reality is that a system that says “an electric car at 100 euros per month, whatever the mileage you do”, It is not possible. Or, it will be conditioned to 1,000 terminals per year. On top of that, the one that would have the lowest price is the Dacia Spring. That too would be phenomenal. It would mean that we would finance a car built 100% in China. It would be exceptional. »
Stop bonuses and penalties
So how to make the electric car attractive and available to households with the lowest incomes? That is not the question, according to Pierre Chasseray. It would be better, in his eyes, a smooth system allowing everyone to turn to the car that suits them :
“I am in favor of one thing: the car has a cost. Point. We stop with these bonuses and penalties. We make a smooth system and people will choose what suits them. We must leave technological independence, let manufacturers put products on the market that meet people’s needs and finances. But also stop wanting to twist the arm of consumers, manufacturers, by putting bonuses paid by the taxpayer. »
“It doesn’t look like paying for other people’s cars, that’s not the point. There is a price, it’s the price and from there, we stop with bonuses and penalties. In the past, we didn’t do things like that. Today, there are plenty of products on sale but you are forced to take only one, financed by others. »
“People want to invest in something that is at least as good. There, it is the first time, with the electric car, that they are asked to invest in something that does not have autonomy, with which they will not be able to go on vacation. We will have to add weeks of paid vacation if we want people to go to the Côte d’Azur. »
