Come on, let’s end the suspense right away. Yes, it may sound surprising, but with some 66,800 copies sold worldwide in 2022, the Defender is number 1 at Land Rover. And if it was already neck and neck with the former best seller, the Evoque, in 2021, it clearly took the upper hand last year. More than 12,000 copies now separate them, it’s not nothing.
Disappointing sales, a little less than Jaguar however
Obviously, the British manufacturer has found the ideal formula to replace its icon. But we note that it is the only model to have progressed last year. Like Jaguar, the group’s other brand… Jaguar-Land Rover, 2022 will have been a bad year. All models dipped, and not just a little. It is true however that the range is in full renewal. Range Rover and Range Rover Sport have been completely redesigned. The Evoque and the Velar are reaching halfway through their career and have just benefited from a very slight refreshment. Obviously, under these conditions, it is difficult to post exceptional figures.
Something else that we notice, and with the notable exception of the Defender, the accessible, less chic, more commoner models not decked out in the Range Rover name are not at the party. The Discovery Sport sold for almost twice as much as the Defender. The “just short” Discovery, let’s not even talk about it, its sales have plunged by almost half. To wonder if, in the future, Land Rover will not prefer to focus on its Range Rover models.
