Mitsubishi Outlander: the former king of the rechargeable hybrid will return to France

Mitsubishi has announced the launch in Europe of the fourth generation of the Outlander PHEV, its large SUV with plug-in hybrid engine.

Mitsubishi is in the midst of rebuilding in Europe. The brand had for a time considered a departure from the Old Continent. But it stayed there, pushed by Renault, Mitsubishi being integrated into the Alliance.

However, the three-diamond firm has decided to rebuild an economy range in Europe, with two new models that are rebadged Renaults. The new ASX is thus a clone of the Captur, the next Colt will be a twin of the Clio. In purely Mitsubishi products, there remains for the moment the Space Star, the Eclipse Cross and the L200 pick-up.

But surprise, another “real” Mitsubishi will make its return: the Outlander. And it will not be a rebadged Renault Austral. It will be the fourth generation of the brand’s family SUV, unveiled in 2021. Initially, the model was not to come to us. But the brand therefore changed its mind and confirmed the launch of the model on the Old Continent in 2024.

Unsurprisingly, it will be exclusively offered with the rechargeable hybrid. This is what made the Outlander famous. The third generation had been one of the first plug-in models from a generalist manufacturer, which had allowed it to be a great success. The brand had sold 200,000 copies of the third generation rechargeable hybrid in Europe. For several years, the Outlander was thus the best-selling PHEV on our continent.

With such a pool of customers, it also seemed crazy not to give a direct follow-up to the model. With delay, it will therefore be done, even if in the meantime, the Eclipse Cross has filled in part of the hole.

The manufacturer says the new Outlander PHEV “will incorporate a European adaptation of the evolution of Mitsubishi Motors’ second-generation plug-in hybrid system, with dual electric motor all-wheel drive.”
