Since November 1, 48 departments have been affected by the obligation to wear winter tires. What about all-season erasers?
Since November 1, it has been compulsory to install winter tires on all four wheels of your car, in no less than 48 departments, located in particular in mountainous areas. Among them, the Bas-Rhin, the Pyrénées Orientales, the Territoire de Belfort and the Ardèche. While all of these departments are not always concerned, as this obligation sometimes only applies to a few municipalities, everyone must comply with it. This therefore means that even if you simply have to drive through a city subject to this new measure, you will need to install suitable rubbers on your vehicle. But don’t panic, the areas concerned are then materialized by very specific signs, installed at the entrance and exit, in order to warn motorists.

Drivers affected by this new law must therefore install specific tires on their vehicle. These must then at least be marked with the logo M+S, which stands for “Mud + Snow”, confirming that these compounds are able to ride in mud and on snow. However, the use of these will only be tolerated until 2024. It is therefore best to choose tires also bearing the acronym 3PMSF (3 Peaks Moutain Snow Flake), as well as a logo representing a mountain in which appears a Snowflake. These then promise optimum grip on all terrains. But will it be possible to opt for all-season tires, which are also supposed to be used in winter. The answer is yes, provided that they display the aforementioned symbols and inscriptions. Otherwise, it will not be possible to travel with them in the departments and municipalities affected by this new measure.
What sanctions?
Good news, no sanctions will be applied this year. But from 2022, if you have not fitted your car with suitable tires, be aware that you will incur a fixed fine of € 135, which may also be accompanied by immobilization of your vehicle. Note that it is also possible to install additional devices, if you are worried about not having enough grip on snow or ice. Think about chains and socks, which must then be installed on the driving wheels of the vehicle, or on all four if you wish to benefit from optimum safety.
