Every year it’s the same song. Every February 1, the price of tolls is revised upwards, an increase then indexed to inflation. In fact, motorway companies, such as Vinci, APRR or SANEF have the right to pass 70% of the latter on to the amount that users have to pay. If the increase remains generally measured, the year 2022 could be very bad for motorists. Indeed, and even if it will still have to wait for validation and confirmation from the government, the price of tolls should climb by 2% on average next February, against 0.44% in 2021.
What explains such an outbreak? THE’inflation therefore, which is particularly high this year. It was in fact 1.2% over one year in July and 1.9% in August, reaching 2.8% in November. And this time, there is no question of freezing prices, despite the request formulated in 2019 by the government, in order to stem the yellow vests crisis. This was then refused by the motorway companies and our leaders were forced to comply with their will, because of the concrete contracts that bind the two parties. The latter had nevertheless conceded to offer a 30% discount to regular users, under very strict conditions.
Who will increase the most?
For now, all this information is still subject to confirmation by the government. Nevertheless, we can expect a very strong increase within the ASF network, which will increase its prices by 2.19% on average. The company, in charge of the motorways in the south of France is then followed by APRR, with a surge of 2.05%. The rest is not yet known, although these increases are for the moment only projects, which will have to be presented to the Users’ Committee for validation. However, do not expect any pleasant surprise …
