BYD’s European project is now clearly oriented towards the construction of a new factory. The United Kingdom now appears clearly excluded, while France remains in the list of opportunities.
BYD intends to play a leading role in the European market in the medium term. A representation and volumes that lead him to foresee an industrial presence on our continent. Even if the option of buying the Ford plant in Saarlouis in Germany, promised to be closed, remains officially considered, the Chinese manufacturer seems to prioritize the installation of a completely new site. Something to whet the appetite of the different countries in the region.
One thing is now clear, it will not be the UK. The country’s economic situation does not reassure Chinese investors about such a long-term investment. A new setback for the British automotive industry, whose production is at its lowest. In 2022, production is thus established at the same level as in 1956 with 775,014 cars… And other bad news could come.
France, Germany, Spain, Poland and Hungary are on the other hand today on the list of “finalists” selected by BYD. Undoubtedly, intense negotiations will be on the agenda to attract an investment which will amount to hundreds of millions or even billions of euros and the thousands of direct jobs linked. The site could thus assemble several product lines (Atto3, Dolphin, Seagull, Seal, etc.) as well as their batteries.
BYD factory in Europe: the United Kingdom clearly excluded, France still in the running
