In summer, the motorhome is the ideal ally for unconstrained excursions. But in winter, how do you store it and keep it in good condition? Discover all our tips.
Since the start of the health crisis linked to the Coronavirus epidemic, the camping-car has the wind in its sails. Many French people have indeed fallen for this new way of traveling, which makes it possible to overcome many constraints, and in particular the possible closures of hotels and restaurants. But with the holidays over for most of us and winter just around the corner, now is the time to worry about storing your motorhome. Because no, it cannot be improvised! Check out our five tips below.
Empty the motorhome and clean the interior
It may sound obvious, but it’s always good to remember it. Before putting your motorhome in hivernage, remember to empty it completely, which will help you to clean every nook and cranny. Remove all food from the cupboards and especially the fridge, to prevent them from molding or attracting pests. You can install a small container with baking soda, which will absorb bad odors in the latter once it is turned off. Also remember to clean damp areas such as the kitchen and bathroom to avoid mold growth.
Thoroughly clean the exterior
Again, this is an essential step, especially if you spent your vacation by the sea. Clean the entire exterior of your motorhome as well as the chassis, subject to rust due to salt. and spray. Of course, don’t forget to scrub everything with soap, for best results. You can also apply a wax that will protect the paint and make it softer, to prevent it from drying out. Of course, avoid going to the rollers in a service station, as they can damage the accessories of your motorhome.
Choose your storage location carefully
This aspect should not be left to chance. If you can store your motorhome in a closed box, which will prevent it from suffering the vagaries of the weather, which is often difficult in winter between bad weather and cold. Choose a air-conditioned and dry place, so that humidity does not damage the vehicle. You can also slightly open a vent to circulate the air inside, if your motorhome is parked in a secure place. It is also possible to cover it with a large tarp to avoid dust and sunlight, which can damage the seats and interior upholstery.
Protect the battery and fuel tank
Of course, once you’ve decided to put your motorhome away for the winter, remember to unplug all electrical appliances, from the fridge to the coffee machine. Then, you have two options: either leave the battery plugged in, making sure it is still at a good level of charge, or disconnect it and remove it entirely. Also remember to protect your tank by filling it to the maximum, in order to avoid the appearance of humidity. If you have a diesel, consider using a additive fuel, which helps prevent the appearance of algae in the tank.
Pay attention to your tires
Another aspect that should not be overlooked when wintering your motorhome: the tires. Before leaving it to rest, remember to check the condition of the latter, as well as the pressure. If possible, avoid storing your vehicle on grass, and always remember to cover your gums, so that they are not damaged by UV. Finally, if your motorhome is large, it is also recommended to lower the stabilizers, in order to reduce the pressure on the tires. If you plan to ride with it, consider switching to winter tires, which are now mandatory in the mountains!
