Cloned models are widely used in the automotive industry. Toyota is one of the manufacturers who lend their models the most: Corolla and RAV4 from Suzuki, bZ4X and GR86 from Subaru, previous generations of Aygo from Peugeot and Citroën… and now the Yaris from Mazda.
The partnership between Mazda and Toyota is not new, since Toyota has been offering a rebadged Mazda 2 on the American market since 2019. Today, the two manufacturers are doing the opposite, since Mazda is preparing to market a barely retouched Yaris in its European catalog.
No aesthetic change
Here, unlike the Suzuki Across and Swace which have revised shields compared to the Toyota RAV4 and Corolla Touring Sports, the Mazda 2 is identical in all respects to its base, the last generation Yaris. No change on the optical units or bumpers, only the logo evolves to adopt that of the manufacturer of Hiroshima. Ditto inside, where the Mazda takes over absolutely the entire interior, up to the upholstery. Only the logo of the steering wheel can distinguish them.
The aim of the maneuver is above all to recover the proven hybridization of the Toyota, which will allow Mazda to reduce the average CO2 of its range, in order to be in compliance with the European CAFE regulations. Thus, the Mazda 2 “Hybrid” is fitted with the same three-cylinder petrol unit as the Yaris, the 93 hp 1.5, associated with a 59 kW electric motor. This engine offers a cumulative power of 116 hp. The performances are therefore identical, with a 0 to 100 km / h in 9.7 s and a top speed set at 175 km / h. As for consumption, it is 4 l / 100 km at most, while CO2 emissions oscillate between 87 and 93 g / CO2 per km.
Marketing in spring 2022
The new Mazda 2 Hybrid will be marketed in Europe from spring 2022. If the Yaris offers two petrol units (1.0 70 hp and 1.5 120 hp) in addition to its hybrid engine, the Mazda 2 could only offer a hybrid variant. The range and prices have not yet been revealed. The Japanese city car will be produced at the same location as its twin in the French factory in Onnaing (59).
