Driving without a license is obviously prohibited. But what are the penalties if you cannot present the little pink paper?
In France, no less than 770,000 motorists circulate without a driving license. An edifying and constantly increasing figure, unveiled by the Road safety. However, as you can imagine, driving without being in possession of your little pink paper is strictly prohibited, and heavily punishable by law. This also applies if you are driving a vehicle for which you do not have a license, even if you can for example drive a car. In all cases, you will incur a heavy penalty, with a fixed fine of € 800, increased to € 1,600. It is then a offense, which opens the possibility for a judge to have recourse to additional penalties:
- Vehicle confiscation
- Community service penalty
- Penalty of day-fines
- Prohibited from driving certain vehicles for five years
- Obligation to complete a road safety awareness course
Another scenario
If, on the other hand, you are indeed in possession of your driver’s license but you don’t have it with you, that’s another story, much less serious this time. You will then simply incur a flat-rate fine of € 11, which can then rise to € 38. You then have five days to present your pink paper to a police station or a gendarmerie, under penalty of a fine of 750 €. On the other hand, you do not risk any point withdrawal for this little offense. But do not forget that it is compulsory to drive with your driving license on you, as well as the vehicle papers.
