Mercedes’ first premium electric sedan has an aerodynamic coefficient of 0.20. It beats that of the Tesla Model 3 which held the record until now.
Mercedes has just unveiled its flagship in the electric category: the Mercedes EQS. A luxury sedan packed with technologies which arrogates to itself a very enviable title: that of the car most aerodynamic series in the world. Its aerodynamic coefficient (Cx) is 0.20 against 0.23 for the Tesla Model 3 which was until then the most aerodynamic car in the world. Two other rivals of the Mercedes EQS display very close Cx: the updated version of the Tesla Model S unveiled at the start of the year as well as the Lucid Air which both have a Cx of 0.21. Note, however, that two other production cars did even better in their time: the General Motors EV1 produced from 1996 to 1999 and the Volkswagen XL1 (2013, 250 copies) whose aerodynamic coefficient was only 0.19.
Mercedes has obviously worked a lot on the design of the EQS, the lines of which are quite close to the concept unveiled in 2019. In addition to the general arched shape, there is work on the plunging hood, doors very short front and rear overhangs, retractable door handles or door and window seals supposed to reduceair and also reduce aeroacoustic nuisance.
Up to 770 km of autonomy for the Mercedes EQS
Inside the Mercedes EQS, we find the spectacular Hyperscreen screen 55 inch (141cm) curved shape that extends from one windshield upright to the other. Available on the most upscale versions, it combines two screens You are 12.3-inch driver and front passenger and a 17.7-inch mid-position infotainment screen.
Marketing of the EQS will begin in the fall with two models to begin with. The EQS 450+ with a 245 kW rear engine developing 333 hp and 568 Nm of torque. Its 107.8 kWh battery gives it up to 770 km ofautonomy (WLTP cycle). The second model is the EQS 580 4MATIC with all-wheel drive with two engines developing 385 Kw and 5232 hp for a torque of 855 Nm. Both have a top speed of 210 km / h. Direct current charging can reach 200 kW and Mercedes announces that 15 minutes will be enough to recover 300 km of range. AMG, the sports arm of Mercedes, has also planned a special edition of the EQS. No price has been communicated for the moment.
