According to a Cetelem study, no less than 34% of motorists think they own an SUV, although this is not the case at all.
Today the SUV are absolutely everywhere, and not all manufacturers offer at least one in their range. To tell the truth, they are so present on the roads, in the dealerships and in the communications of the manufacturers, that some even think to have one… even when it is not at all the case! Indeed, an astonishing study of theCetelem Automobile Observatory 2022 notes a rather surprising fact: a third of motorists think they own an SUV, wrongly. A puzzling figure, but which is no doubt explained by the marketing sleight of hand on the part of the brands, which transform any vehicle into an SUV, with large reinforcements of plastic protections. What seriously to create confusion in the minds of the public …
SUV owners are doing better
Of the 11,000 surveyed in 17 countries around the world, no less than 45% therefore really think they are driving an SUV on a daily basis, when this is not the case. If this figure is “only” 34% in France, it reaches 58% in Poland, while in Brazil, it is even two drivers out of three who make the mistake. Conversely, only 5% of people surveyed who own an SUV do not know they have one… it’s still quite surprising!
Overall, the public has a hard time really putting a definition on these vehicles. Indeed, only 27% of those questioned identified the Peugeot 3008 as belonging to this category. More worryingly, 6% think that the Renault Clio and the Audi A4 are SUVs! As a reminder, these vehicles are generally characterized by a slightly higher ground clearance, as well as bodywork protections on the sides. On the other hand, they do not always have all-wheel drive, and are therefore not systematically 4X4.
