The news caused a stir: on May 12, OpenAI opened ChatGPTChatGPT to the web. As a result, if one asks questions relating to recent events, one is no longer supposed to obtain this age-old answer: “As a language model, my knowledge stops in September 2021 (…)”.
The operation was already possible thanks to some extensions such as WebChatGPT, but this time the initiative comes from OpenAI and could therefore be of particular interest.
Only for users of the paid version
First obstacle, only subscribers to ChatGPT Plus – the paid version – are entitled to this new tool. And, even for them, ChatGPT did not make the process easy. Openness to the Web is not implicit: it must be clearly claimed, firstly by asking to access it within the Settings.
Ask and ask again…
However, even after having made this basic configuration, the case is not won. Web access does not work on any request that we may have asked previously. It is therefore necessary to ask a new one, but before that make sure that the option chosen is indeed GPT-4 and that the option Browsing is newly validated. Otherwise, ChatGPT reverts to its default mode. We will quickly understand why this new function is not further pushed to the front of the stage.

In fact, it didn’t take long for us to become disillusioned. ChatGPT always refuses to make any predictions, but at the very beginning, he first asked if we wanted him to go and analyze the trends on the web. He then had expected answers, nothing that justifies going through him.
Because here it is: to obtain the analyzes related to the current Web, it is necessary to be patient. THE chatbotchatbot tells us that he is exploring various links, analyzing them, exploring other links… After about two minutes, he provides an answer that we would have on Google almost immediately.
A function that makes him lose his panache
In reality, in this role of web explorer, ChatGPT does not seem at ease. The panache he can show in his basic modus operandi seems to be gone. Very quickly, we purely and simply forget this openness to the Web to keep only this ChatGPT knows how to do brilliantly: operate from its vast database, certainly dated, but on which it has developed real know-how.
