Excessive slowness: can we be penalized?

Driving too fast is prohibited by the Highway Code, as we know. But what if you drive too slowly? We take stock.

If you have your driver’s license, you obviously know that speeding is reprehensible by law, depending on the difference between the authorized speed and the speed at which you are traveling. But is it possible to get sanctioned if you move too slowly? Well, contrary to what one might think, the answer is yes! The police have every right to issue you a fine if you drive too slowly, although this is at the discretion of whoever stops you.

Dangerous behavior

If there is no minimum speed on the road, however, this is not the case on highways. Indeed, the Highway Code stipulates that it is strictly forbidden to travel at less than 80 km / h in the leftmost lane on expressways, ” when the traffic is fluid and the weather conditions allow sufficient visibility and grip ”. It is in this case that you risk a fine, especially since it is a very dangerous behavior for you, as for the others, in addition to obstructing traffic. Indeed, the article article R413-19 is clear on this subject, since it specifies that ” no driver may interfere with the normal running of other vehicles by traveling without valid reason at an abnormally low speed ».

Very rare, verbalization for excess slowness is therefore at the discretion of the police or the gendarme, especially since this offense is not detected by the radars. If this ever happens to you, you will then get a simple fixed fine of € 35, reduced to € 22, while no point withdrawal is provided for by law. In the event of a repeat offense, the penalty can then reach 150 €.
