The municipality of New York wants to soon authorize the circulation of four-wheeled cargo bikes, in order to reduce the number of delivery trucks present in the city. These vehicles, which come in the form of real mini-vans with pedals, are already being tested in several major European cities, including Paris.
Promote the circulation of four-wheeled electric cargo bikes
New York City wants to promote the development of these four-wheeled electric cargo bikes, small delivery vans equipped with pedals that allow goods to be transported without emitting the slightest CO emissions.2 in the air. This type of vehicle has many advantages, starting with the fact of being able to circulate on cycle lanes and to move easily in narrow streets or areas that are usually pedestrianized. Although they look like compact delivery vans, they perform like any other electric cargo bike.
What is still only a proposal aims to use these machines for so-called last mile deliveries. The goal is obviously to reduce the number of delivery trucks in circulation in New York, vehicles that are both polluting and invasive, regular sources of congestion and stressful situations on the streets of the city.
Fewer trucks in city centers and reduced CO2 emissions
For many years now, more classic cargo bikes have been criss-crossing the city streets delivering different types of cargo. Their increased use, backed up by four-wheeled vehicles, should obviously benefit the environment. On average, a delivery truck can indeed be “replaced” by two cargo bikes, reducing CO emissions2 in the air of 14 tons per year, announces Ydanis Rodriguez, commissioner of the New York Department of Transportation, in a statement. In 2022, cargo bikes made more than 130,000 trips, delivering more than 5 million packages, according to the New York Department of Transportation (DOT).
Of the existing models, the UPS eQuad is arguably the most advanced. It is in any case the one that benefits today from the best exposure, since it is already rolling, on an experimental basis, in various European cities, from Dublin to Copenhagen, via Amsterdam, Stockholm or even Paris.
For now, the eQuad has a range of around 60 kilometres, but has a fast battery exchange system so that it can continue to deliver.
