Several cases of vehicles stolen with the help of AirTag, trackers sold by Apple, have been spotted by Canadian police who warn.
Car thieves are getting more and more ingenious. To steal vehicles from their owners, some do not hesitate to divert the use of recent technologies like the plotters sold by Apple. Explanations.
The Canadian police have indeed revealed that several luxury vehicles had been stolen since September using this new technique. Thieves use AirTags, these little tracers used to locate lost items. These have been sold by the brand to Apple since the spring of 2021. The device is equipped with a U1 electronic chip (iPhone 11 and later models) and a single button battery, with a one-year autonomy. Thanks to Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology, the location is as precise as possible to find your precious using your phone and an application like Find My.
The owners tracked to their homes
The thieves therefore diverted the primary use of AirTags, by using them to “mark” luxury vehicles spotted in car parks in particular. The device is well hidden, for example in a coupling device on the rear bumper or in the fuel filler cap. Thus, the owner of the vehicle does not distrust and goes home, not thinking that he is being followed. The team of thieves receives the GPS data from Apple’s tracker on their own smartphone, allowing them to locate the address of the car to be stolen so they can take action later, in complete discretion …
In some cases, the AirTag can send an alert when an unknown AirTag is nearby. On the manufacturer’s website, it read: “You are the only person who can locate your AirTag. Your data and location history are never stored on it. The devices that relay your AirTag’s location information also remain anonymous, and that data is encrypted every step of the way. So that nobody, not even Apple, can know the position of your AirTag, nor know which device made it possible to locate it. ”. This does not prevent thefts, so we advise you to remain vigilant.
