The former pilot who became a specialist in the disabled marathon was hit by a truck in 2020. After multiple facial fractures and numerous operations, he was finally released from the hospital.
L’ex-Formula 1 driver (at Jordan, Lotus, Williams, Minardi) and champion CART, had been involved in a huge crash in 2001, during which had lost both legs.
Alessandro Zanardi was subsequently converted into thehandisport, winning medals at the Paralympic Games in London and Rio. During a training near Siena, in 2020, he was hit by a truck and hit the ground hard with his head. Consequence: “a major facial head trauma, a shattered face and a deep fracture of the frontal bone”. In one year, the former pilot had undergone three surgeries.
This morning his wife –Daniela Zanardi– announces that her husband came home from the hospital, almost a year and a half after his terrible accident.
“It was a big milestone that Alex was able to leave the hospital a few weeks ago and is now back home with us. We had to wait a very long time for this and we are very happy that it has been possible now, although temporary stays in special clinics are still planned in the future to carry out special rehabilitation measures on the spot. Recovery continues to be a long process. […] The rehabilitation program led by doctors, physiotherapists, neuropsychologists and speech therapists has made steady progress. Of course, the setbacks are there and can still occur. Sometimes you also have to take two steps back in order to take a step forward. But Alex proves again and again that he is a real fighter. […] We still cannot predict how his healing will progress. It is still a long and difficult road that Alex approaches with a lot of fighting spirit. It is a great help for him and for us to receive so much support on this path, not just from the doctors and therapists who work intensively with him. Our friends are always there for us. This includes the BMW Group family on whom we can always count and which is firmly by our side, even in these difficult times. We are very grateful to all for this and much more, as these strong bonds give us extra energy. This also goes for the continued sympathy we receive from racing drivers, fans and acquaintances around the world. We would like to express a great Grazie to all who send their kind thoughts and power to Alex. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year. “
