Zapping Auto Moto Peugeot 408 test: climb in g(r)ame
Leapmotor, you know? This automotive start-up of Chinese origin has only just landed in France, it is not surprising that this name is not yet familiar to you. In addition, it is very young since it was founded in 2015. However, despite its notoriety to build, it seems to be of very close interest to European manufacturers, according to the statements of the American press agency Bloomberg. According to their information, after Volkswagen, Stellantis (owner of Citroën, Fiat, Jeep and Peugeot among others) is indeed considering a merger with Leapmotor.
Not useless to strengthen its presence in China
The case is very far from being concluded. The proof, the sources asked not to be explicitly quoted because the thing is kept secret for the moment. Stellantis’ objective behind this strategic partnership would be to strengthen its presence in China. Note that the automotive group already sells Citroëns and Peugeots through its joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Group. It must be recognized that the results are not up to par. From January to June, only around 15,000 vehicles were sold in the Middle Kingdom, a figure down 13% compared to the first half of 2022. By way of comparison, some 432,000 were sold. Stellantis models in North America and 717,000 in Europe.
An astonishing position nevertheless, unless…
Make a pact with the enemy to fight him better? We are entitled to think so as Carlos Tavares, the famous boss of the automobile giant, never minces his words vis-à-vis this country which he accuses of representing a threat to European industry. A partnership with a brand from there, however, would certainly make it possible to work on a low-cost electric car project that is sorely lacking for the moment at Stellantis and from which Leapmotor is already benefiting. Case to follow.
