It was a vision of the future, and it was in the mid-1960s. From its beginnings, the saga Star Trek featured futuristic technologies that no one imagined could actually exist one day. One of them is the tricorder. A small tool diagnosticdiagnostic laptop, one version of which was dedicated to medical use. Today, this accessory exists. He porteporte by name of Swift Ray 1 and was set up by a team of scientists from Canada and Mexico. Compact, the device fits in a trouser pocket and it connects to a smartphone to retrieve its data and process it. THE Swift Ray 1 can both make photographsphotographs medical quality and images of thermographythermography infrared. The latter makes it possible to raise the temperature of the wound to know if it is infected and not inflamed. Better still, to refine the diagnosis, the accessory is also equipped with a lightlight ultraviolet. It serves to make the bacteria shine if they are present in the wound.
An all-in-one diagnostic device
It is this bacterial fluorescence combined with thermography that makes it possible to identify the infection on the injured area. Scientists clinically tested the device on 66 wounds. The device judged 20 non-inflammatory, 26 inflammatory and 20 infected. The result was 100% accurate for infected wounds and 91% correct for uninfected ones. The tool could greatly facilitate the diagnosis of an injury by the medical profession as soon as the patient arrives and opt for the appropriate care or treatment as soon as possible. And with its small size and its combined thermography and bacterial fluorescence tools, it has the other advantage of a price that should be very reasonable for a medical device.
